USA

Undergraduate Study

Admission requirements vary significantly from one college to another. Some institutions are very selective, while others accept most applicants. In general, the following will be taken into account in the admissions process:

  • Academic record: Transcript (the most important factor)
  • An application essay
  •  Scores on standardised tests such as the SAT I, SAT II or the TOEFL
  • letters of recommendation, if required

As a general rule, American universities and colleges expect international applicants’ records to reflect at least 12 years of primary and secondary schooling, and to meet the entrance requirements of the tertiary institutions in their home country.

Graduate/Postgraduate Study

At the graduate level individuals must meet admissions requirements at both the institutional and departmental level, each of which is subject to considerable variation. Institutional requirements are determined by the graduate school and are applicable to all applicants. Departmental requirements determine admission for candidates in that particular area of study. Departmental admissions requirements are often more specific and demanding than institutional requirements. Institutional requirements will include:

Evidence of four years tertiary study: official transcripts / academic records will be required from each undergraduate and/or graduate institution that you have attended.

Supporting references or recommendations: two or three will be required, from professors or lecturers, if you are applying to an academic degree program. References from your undergraduate institution and your employer(s) will be useful if you are applying to a professional programme.

Personal statement: This can be a deciding factor in an application. Content may be either a general or a comprehensive personal statement, or responses to very specific questions asked by the school.

Scores on one or more admissions tests: The most common are GRE,GMAT, TOEFL

Australia

Undergraduate Study

Advanced International Certificate of Education: Completion of the 'Advanced International Certificate of Education' at a Pass level or above.

GCE A Levels: Completion of at least three 'Advanced Level' subjects in the same academic year. A maximum of two 'Advanced Subsidiary (AS)' subjects may be included in the aggregate score. Two AS subjects are not deemed to be equivalent to one 'Advanced Level' subject.

International Baccalaureate: Completion of the 'International Baccalaureate' with an aggregate mark of 24 or more over six subjects.

West African Higher School Certifcate (Principal Level)

West African General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level)

Students who do not meet these minimum entry requirements may apply to an Australian based foundation programme.

 Postgraduate Study

Most Australian universities accept the graduation system of three years for entry into most postgraduate courses. A Nigerian bachelor degree like B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. (ordinary) is equivalent to a Australian Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

However, some courses and universities may require a qualification equivalent to Australian Bachelor (Honours) Degree, which requires either a honours graduation degree like B.A. (H), B.Comm (H) etc or 16 years of formal education, which would mean another year after graduation or a four year degree course like B.E., B.Tech and other such courses.

For most Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in Nigeria or its equivalent is essential.
